About The Criterion

Mission, Principles & People

A principled account of who we are, what drives us, and the people at the heart of our work.

Our Mission

British and Western society faces an unprecedented set of crises, and the current paradigms behind policy are becoming increasingly futile in navigating them. As policymakers and researchers turn to the same ideological frameworks to solve today's emerging challenges, faith in the political establishment has depleted on an unprecedented scale.

Economic inequality runs unchecked, social fragmentation rises, and the welfare state continues to be starved. Underlying these problems is an increasing uncertainty on what it means to be British, and what values should drive our civilisation.

The Criterion sees genuine, ethical, and value-driven policy as essential to the future. Our framework transcends traditional approaches that have repeatedly failed—instead adopting diverse intellectual sources to provide innovative thought leadership, with a solution-focused approach centred on outcomes rather than tribalistic ideological leanings.

Our Vision

By recommending innovative, value-driven policy grounded in diverse intellectual traditions, and by bringing together relevant stakeholders to foster collaboration, we believe an ethical, revived, and respectable Britain is an achievable reality.

The Criterion is a revivalist think tank and forum dedicated to improving state–society relations—forging a Greater Britain for all. It is in the context of a weakened British society and state that The Criterion was founded, with the fundamental goal of reviving both.
